What agents actually earn
You have probably seen the claim that 60–70% of agents sold zero homes last year. It is worth knowing where that number came from before you repeat it — and what the real figures say instead.
- The 60–70% “sold nothing” figure traces to a remark by a Redfin executive at a conference, not to NAR. It counts every active MLS licence, including part-timers, referral-only agents and admins who never intended to sell a house.
- NAR's own Member Profile says only about 5% of residential-specialist members reported zero transactions, and the typical member closed ten transaction sides.
- The median REALTOR® gross income was $58,100 (2024 calendar year).
- The real gap is tenure: a median of $8,100 in the first two years against $78,900 at sixteen years or more. 62% of the newest agents earned under $10,000.
- NAR membership was about 1.44 million in June 2026, with leadership projecting roughly 1.2 million by year end; about 100,000 people left the business during 2025.
